If you
If you’ve been anywhere near a club or festival recently, the name Denzal Park will ring more than a few bells. In only a few short years, Denzal Park, comprised of Australian house music stalwart Kam Denny and newcomer Paul Zala, have become one of the leading lights of the Australian club scene.
Kam Denny, the man behind such highly successful outfits as Vandalism, 16th Element and Neurotic Jock (not to mention work under the name his mother gave him), has built a wellearned reputation as one of Australia’s hardest working and most respected DJs/producers. His music speaks for itself - eight #1s on the ARIA Club Chart and seven appearances on the Ministry Of Sound Annual, not to mention countless appearances on dance charts and in media all over the world.
Like so many creative partnerships before them, the Australian duo met when Zala approached Denny with a fistful of demos. With Denny impressed by Zala’s musical talent, the pair quickly fell into a creative groove that played to each other’s strengths, with Zala’s talent for melodies complemented by Denny’s skills with production, arrangements and beats.
After signing with one of Australia’s leading dance music labels Neon Records, the boys’ arrival was announced in emphatic fashion with a bootleg remix of Ce Ce Peniston’s hit Finally which was originally constructed simply for use in Denzal Park’s DJ sets. The remix spread like wildfire swiftly becoming a club favourite and climbing to the #1 spot on the coveted Beatport Top 100 in addition to the ARIA Club Chart and various other club charts worldwide.
Other early releases such as Sunday School, Madagascar and Angel highlighted Denzal Park’s signature sound: aesthetic, strong house with generous doses of melody and groove and it wasn’t long before industry heavyweights and clubbers alike jumped on board transforming the Denzal Park name into a prolific musical machine. Since joining forces, the boys have belted out remixes for the likes of Kylie Minogue, INXS, Dirty South, Full Intention, TV ROCK, Miss Kittin & The Hacker, Inaya Day, TyDi, Natalie Bassingthwaithe, Supafly Inc. and numerous others.
More recently, the boys have again found themselves at the top end of the charts, with their release Filter Freak hogging the #1 position on the ARIA Club Chart for 8 consecutive weeks. Not bad for a track that had been lying unfinished for almost a decade – only when Denny was sorting through old equipment did he rediscover it and decide to have a crack at knocking it into shape. Luckily, the timing was spot on, with the funky, bass-driven Filter Freak quickly embraced by clubbers worldwide and receiving heavy rotation on Australian radio. They also hit the #1 ARIA Club Chart spot this year with their underground monster Ascension followed closely by the #6 hit I’m A Drum-Machine.
I’m A Drum-Machine was quickly snapped up by prolific European label Hed Kandi who - with the help of a killer topline from young rappers Lex One & Mike Beatz (better known as Wizard Sleeve) - have turned the record into one of the European Summer’s biggest hits. The record has already hit #2 on the UK Club Chart & Breakers Chart and is picking up support from the likes of Pete Tong & Scott Mills on Radio 1.
This year the boys are also dropping a major secret weapon that’s been hidden in their crates for the last couple of months; Militia is Denzal Park at their super-sized best - a killer synth paired with one of the biggest drops you're gonna hear all year! Already a staple in the sets of top jocks including Thomas Gold, Sebastian Ingrosso & TV ROCK, expect this to cause some serious damage when spun across the upcoming festival season downunder.
Beyond their own releases & remixes, the boys have also lent their production skills providing the beats to two of the biggest cross-over dance hits in recent years in the form of Wynter Gordon’s ARIA Top 20 single Til Death and Zoe Badwi’s ARIA Top 10 smash Freefallin’ – which recently scored the Denzal Park their first APRA Award for Best Dance Release of the Year.
Add to this being handpicked to provide an exclusive remix disc for Kylie Minogue’s deluxe version of her Aphrodite album and you’ll see why the lads are quickly becoming Australia’s most in demand production duo.
The chemistry that assures Denzal Park’s studio success has translated effortlessly to the stage. Uplifting sets featuring tag-team mixing and seamless integration of accapellas and FX showcase Denny’s 16 years of deck experience and Zala’s innate ability for song selection. The simple formula of playing tracks they dig and refusing to take themselves too seriously ensures full dancefloors of satisfied punters at festivals and clubs alike.
Whether it’s writing, producing, remixing or gigging, Denzal Park are the complete package. With Denny and Zala in the best form of their lives, expect to be hearing a lot more from Denzal Park.
