| Mark Spano |
| Biography |
Mark’s interest in music began at an early age with the influence of his father who has also been playing in bands since he was in his early teens and still gigs to this day. Through this influence he developed a love for music of all genres and styles. He distinctly remembers being taught his first song, ‘Eight Days a Week’ by the Beatles in the living room of his childhood home. This interest grew to a broad knowledge of 50s, 60s and 70s tunes. Once reaching his teens, Marks older brother, David, made him aware of bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains, Jeff Buckley and the greatest Aussie band of all time INXS which turned his interest into some what of an obsession. Spending most of his time idolising these people and writing songs rather than focusing on school, he started a band with some mates playing their first gig at the age of 14 in front of about 1000 people at their school fair. This obsession was immediately transformed into a need. After finishing year 12 and his friends moving on to their respective careers, Mark found the next couple years writing and developing his own style until meeting a few other musicians with the same love for similar influences. He quickly formed his new project aptly named ‘The Need’. They spent the next 6-7 years playing many sell out shows with many well-respected Melbourne bands.
Mark reached a very low point in his life developing a polyp on his vocal cords prompting immediate surgery, which put his music career on hold. Accepting the fact that he may never sing again, he began working as a labourer until one day a very close mate of his dared him to audition for Australian idol. Thinking nothing would come of it Mark accepted the dare on the condition that his friend would audition too. During the cruelling stages of the competition Mark was shocked at the acceptance and praise that he received, driving him to give it a good old Aussie crack. Mark found this experience an educational one, making him aware of the media and how they play a major part in ensuring your music can be reached by a broader audience. Although Mark did not win the competition, finishing a well respected 3rd place, he has taken this opportunity to reignite his love for performing.
With the help of the wonderful people at Maton Guitars and the support of many family, friends and fans, he is now putting a lot of his time into charities and benefit groups to put his exposure to good use.
Mark recently supported Chris Isaak in his Australian tour across Australia in March 2009.
